Oh New York! Oh end of semester!

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

Dearest readers! It’s been a flurry of activity. Getting assignments finished before leaving for New York. Getting ready to leave for New York… the night before my flight. BEING IN NEW YORK! So much wandering and exploring! Being at The 99% Conference, meeting this man…

Which he promptly signed this…

I was explicitly happy. I am probably going to hang it on my wall.

I got the chance to visit Pentagram Studios. My friend and I just casually walked in, backpacks and all, stood in awe for a bit and my friend asked for a tour. We got it. It also made me explicitly happy.

Oh New York. I took my Canon AE-1 Program camera and a half used roll of colour film that was already residing in my camera, and 3 rolls of 400 B&W Film. Lots of pictures, obviously. I love that city so much. I feel so comfortable there. It’s like the city is waiting for me to move there and follow through with my dreams of working there in the design agencies (Pentagram I am coming for you… in many years). It was welcoming!
Here are my favorite shots.

I don’t even know what else to say about the city. It’s too hard to sum up. There is just SO MUCH going on everywhere. All the time. I just wandered the streets and there was always something interesting around the corner. I can’t wait to go back.

In other news. In addition to all my busyness. I also had a life altering decision on my hands. I got accepted to Concordia! Oh yes! After all the work and worrying! I did get it! Their design program. I found out before New York. So I then officially had to decide where to go. ACAD, or Concordia? Everyone was instantly like…. MONTREAL! JUST DO IT! But lets take into account Money. So that’s what it mainly came down to. Money. I just don’t have it. haha. I made THE BIGGEST pros and cons list I have ever seen. Comparing costs, classes, subjects being taught in those classes. And ACAD won. (I am sorry Concordia! We will meet at some point in our lives I am sure!) So ACAD here I come. Fall 2010. Year 3 of 6 to begin! I am very excited! It’s going to be tough. I have been warned multiple times. But I feel like it increases my excitement for it. It’s a challenge, and it’s going to be worth it.
I am very sure I will complain all the way through… but it’ll be worth it. haha.

Off into the summer. Stay tuned for hopefully some blog worthy work this summer.

Barista Jam

Saturday, March 27th, 2010

Last Friday there was a Barista Jam being held at the Marda Loop location of Phil & Sebastian Coffee Company. My friend was the organizer of the event and asked if I would take some shots of what was going on throughout the evening. Here are three from the night. Three out of many many.

And in other news:
- 6 days till the John Mayer concert.
- 15 days till the Angels & Airwaves concert.
- 16 days till New York City!!!!
- 18 days till The 99% Conference in NYC!
The next little while is going to be amazing.

Also, still haven’t heard from Concordia University yet.

Poster update, Showcase, Coming up

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

So that poster I posted last time, it came in 3rd place! I am pleasantly surprised with that! I did not expect it! Out of 52 students as well! I’ll take what I can get!

Well the past few weeks have been quite the time! I’ve been accepted to ACAD (Alberta College of  Art and Design) for their first years program, sent off a portfolio to Concordia University in Montreal for their Design program (I won’t hear back from them for a while), getting year end showcase related things in order, starting a little photography gig with my friend Cindy (Revel Photography), getting myself ready for my trip to New York City for the 99% Conference (it’s coming up so fast!!), and I started an internship with WAX Partnership here in Calgary!!! (That last one makes me extremely excited!) I am a Digital Development intern. Working in the areas of web and interaction! Stoked to be there!
Oh man! So much going on!

Hopefully this weekend I will have some photos to post on here! There are none right now unfortunately.

Ps. Remember my request last post about how I would like Mumford & Sons to tour anywhere near Calgary. Well they are! They’re going to be in Vancouver end of May. Definitely got a ticket! There are a group of us venturing out there. Going to make a little road trip out of it. Should be fantastic!

Overdue: Latest works…

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

Oh man. I win the award for the least amount of blog posts. I plan on changing that in the future.
Here are my latest works and an update on what is going on with me.

SAIT’s New Media Production and Design Showcase Poster.

Detail View

At the end of the New Media Production and Design program, SAIT holds essentially a portfolio showcase in April to display the works of the graduating student body… which includes myself this year. They hold a competition where each student creates a poster for the event and everyone votes on it. This was my submission. Hopefully we find out soon who won the vote!

I got my latest roll of film back! I have a Canon AE-1 Program 35mm Camera (I am actually holding that camera my little photo on the main page of this site!) and I have been using it in place of using my DLSR (I have a Canon 30d, 17-85mm f/4-5.6 and 70-200mm IS f/2.8 for those who care). I donno there is just this feel and touch that film has that digital doesn’t have. AND PLUS there is nothing better than dropping off a roll of film and then waiting for it to be developed! It’s like Christmas picking it up! haha!
Here are some favorites from my latest roll. 800iso. (forgive the crappy scanning quality… i didn’t have time to scan them at super high dpi)

I met Elyse at a small house show a few weeks ago and got together for coffee last week… which turned into us wandering around Marda Loop taking photos together. Thus the last two photos above resulted. She’s a local photographer here in Calgary, and I have a lot to learn from her about the photography industry. I learned so much during that get together for coffee alone! CHECK HER STUFF OUT YO! http://elysebouvier.com/

Anyways. I think that is all for now. Life is a bit crazy right now! I applied just over a week ago to ACAD for their first years program and I am currently in the process of submitting my portfolio to Concordia in Montreal for their Design program. As well as working on school projects, free lance work, and trying to create portfolio quality pieces for that Concordia portfolio and for that showcase in April. It’s chaotic but I enjoy it. Gotta chase after that dream!

In other subjects.
I am currently reading: Donald Miller – A Million Miles in a Thousand Years: What I Learned While Editing My Life. I just picked it up late last night (Yay for the library being open late) and I am almost half way through! Brilliant book. Definitely puts things in a whole new perspective. I cannot wait to finish it… probably tonight.
I am currently listening to: Mumford & Sons – The Cave. I want these boys so badly to tour near Calgary. When I say near I mean Vancouver or Seattle. I will drive many many hours to see them! haha my friends and I have grand plans if it were to happen! Oh man I hope it does.

Have a lovely night. I must return to focusing on the Canada vs. Russia hockey game on right now. GO CANADA! 7-3 for Canada so far! Lets go boys!
